In 1963 when these two photographs were taken there were only two bridges across the canal, the railway bridge seen in the first photograph, and a road bridge from where the photos were taken. Since then a number of additional bridges have been built south of this road bridge, a second railway bridge and a few other road bridges including a moveable bridge close to water level at the southern end.
