At Wappenshall Junction the Newport Branch met the older Shrewsbury Canal. As the locks up towards Trench were never widened, this became an important transhipment point, with goods destined for the Shropshire Canal being transferred to tub boats that could not only negotiate the locks but also could be hauled up the incline plane at Trench. Some narrowboats of only 6 ft 2in beam and with low headroom were built to allow goods to be taken up as far as the bottom of the incline without having to be transhipped. These became known as Trench Boats.
In recent years this site has been transformed by the Shrewsbury and Newport Canal Trust.
